Sleep: 6 Tips for a Restful Night

Sleep: 6 Tips For a Restful Night

The older we get; the more important sleep becomes. Not necessarily quantity, but quality.  So many of us struggle with good sleep. Some of us have difficulty falling asleep, while others have trouble staying asleep or going back to sleep.  What can we do, here are 6 tips to create a healthy sleep environment.

  1. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day to the best of your ability.  Try not to stray too far from your target times

  2. The ideal room temp is between 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit.

  3. Make your bedroom a sanctuary for quiet.  Try to eliminate all outside noises, (traffic, other people in your house, etc.).  Use earplugs, or a white noise machine to enhance your quiet space

  4. Make it as dark as possible. Your circadian rhythm responds to light and can cause your brain to think it’s daytime.  Reduce screen time, consider blackout curtains, and or a sleep mask to improve your environment.

  5. Invest in a comfortable, supportive mattress and pillow.  Soft, breathable sheets in the summer, and cozy flannel in the winter create a relaxing space after a long day.

  6. Create a daily wind-down routine. Take at least 30 minutes before bed to relax and slow down.  It’s much easier to fall asleep when you’re at ease.  You can incorporate reading, breathwork, soothing music, and/or relaxation exercises.
